Talk on Corncrakes as part of Climate Action Week
As part of climate action week Ms Daly invited Patrick Fitzmaurice from Corncrake Life. Corncrake LIFE is a new project working with farmers and landowners to improve habitat for corncrakes in the Special Protection Area network and surrounding farmland. Patrick gave a very informative talk to some of our TY, 5th year and Leaving Cert students about the lifecycle of the corncrake, the dangers that it faces from modern farming practices and what we can do to save the corncrake from becoming extinct in Ireland.
One action we can all take is to save nettle seeds so that nettle patches can be sown as landing and nesting sites for the corncrakes in Spring next year. Patrick will be returning to the school to collect all the nettle seeds we manage to collect. Feel free to send any collected nettle seeds to Ms Daly as we try to do our bit to help save this beautiful species in Ireland.
